The Universal Standard Behind Every Hospital Visit

Delivering Bedside Magic inside a hospital is not a casual volunteer activity. It requires a structured system to ensure safety, consistency, and meaningful impact for kids in critical need and families.

Screened for Trust and Commitment

Every Volunteer Specialist enters through a multi-step screening process that includes an application, formal interview, and orientation. All candidates commit to a Code of Magicians and Service Agreement that defines expectations for professionalism, reliability, and conduct.
Those who advance are required to pass a hospital-level background check.

The goal of this process ensures that only the most qualified and committed individuals move forward to work within a child’s hospital room.

Why this process matters?
A candidate may be an excellent, charismatic performer, but if they cannot demonstrate reliability, responsiveness, or the ability to follow strict protocols, they will not advance. This ensures that every volunteer earns trust by both families and care teams.

Trained to Deliver in Complex Medical Environments

Bring Magic University prepares candidates to deliver in one of the most complex environments possible.
Candidates are trained in professional, interactive close-up magic designed specifically for hospital settings. This includes adapting in real time to a child’s medical condition, energy level, and emotional state.

The goal is not performance alone, but the ability to establish rapport and create a shared experience that re-engages a child who may be withdrawn, fatigued, distressed, or worse.

Why adaptation training is so important?
A child who is too tired to sit up may only be able to engage with small, visual moments at eye level. A certified Volunteer Specialist knows how to adjust instantly, simplifying the interaction while still creating a moment of surprise and control for the child.

Prepared to Operate Safely Inside Hospitals

Operating within a hospital environment requires a high degree of self-awareness and responsibility.

Bring Magic University includes training on infection control protocols, patient privacy standards, and hospital-specific procedures. The goal of this training is to ensure volunteers can confidently and appropriately enter high-acuity environments such as isolation rooms, oncology units, burn units, and pediatric intensive care.

Why is medical training so critical?
Volunteer Specialists work independently in the hospital. And in an isolation room, a volunteer must adapt both their materials and movements to meet strict infection control standards while still delivering a meaningful interaction. Without this training, access to some of the most vulnerable patients would not be possible.

Equipped to Engage Patients and Families

Bring Magic University trains volunteers in patient-centered engagement. This includes recognizing and responding to emotional cues, working with siblings and families, and supporting the broader care teams. The experience is designed to positively impact not just the patient, but everyone – it is how Volunteer Specialists transform the room.

Why make it a family-wide interaction?
In many Bedside Magic visits, a sibling or parent becomes part of the experience. A parent who has been focused on care and stress may, for the first time that day, laugh alongside their child. When a child sees their parent or sibling laugh it changes things. These shared moments are key to shifting the energy of the entire room.

Tested and Certified for Consistent Delivery

All training is applied and evaluated on a weekly basis. Volunteer candidates must demonstrate competency across performance, safety, and patient engagement before being certified and completing Bring Magic University.

This ensures that every Volunteer Specialist is prepared to deliver consistently in real-world hospital conditions.

Why evaluations are key?
Volunteers are observed and assessed not just on performance, but on how they respond when a child disengages, when a nurse enters mid-visit, or when conditions change unexpectedly. Certification reflects readiness for real hospital environments, not controlled settings.

Bring Magic University Works

For some children, a Bedside Magic visit is the first real laugh of their day. For others, it’s the first smile all week.

This robust training is what allows Bring Magic to reach kids in the toughest of situations. It is what allows Bring Magic to expand into new hospitals and new cities without compromising quality, safety, or the experience delivered to children and families. This training is how sick kids get their magic back.
